At The Walnut Grove we believe that food is a gateway to an array of experiences, both sensory and vital to development. We take the idea of building a strong immune system seriously and use the highest quality ingredients available, combined with carefully crafted menu plans. From making fresh bone broth every week, using the highest quality oils, supporting local farmers markets (And Berkeley Bowl!), and growing our own vegetables; we center nutrition as vital to developing a diverse microbiome and a developing palate that prioritizes a diverse rainbow of vegetables, grains, and spices. We are omnivorous, though plant focused, and when we do eat meat we only use line caught fish, and very occasionally grass-fed (farmers market) meat. We believe that developing a sustainable palate is essential for the future, and food education and sustainability is one of the most important things a child can learn. We cook an array of food from around the world, as food is one of the most important ways to learn about other cultures. Finally, our garden provides a space to plant and harvest our own food, therefore connecting us to the cycle of what it takes to cook food and the larger lifecycle we are part of. Teaching children about gardening, harvesting, and then food preparation is one of the best and inspiring ways we know to illustrate the process and rhythm of nature and health.
